Ubuntu Community Flavors

As we all know Ubuntu Wily Werewolf was released October 22nd, just a couple of weeks back and with it the rest of it’s community flavors that we all know and love. Today I am just going to talk about three of my favorite ubuntu flavors.

Ubuntu Gnome 15.10

Ubuntu Gnome is an official flavor of Ubuntu that features the Gnome Desktop Environment.

Experimental wayland session is now available. Install gnome-session-wayland and then select “GNOME on wayland” from login screen (Only works with OSS GPU drivers).

GNOME Shell. The GNOME desktop environment from where you can search and start applications, switch between windows, etc.

Nautilus (File Manager). An easy to use file manager for organizing your documents, music, pictures, videos and files in general.

Firefox Web Browser. Browse the web with one of the most popular fast, flexible and secure web browsers.

LibreOffice. Create professional documents, spreadsheets, presentations and even more with the open-source office suite.

gedit (Text Editor). A small and lightweight text editor for the GNOME desktop environment.

Ubuntu Software Center. Lets you browse and install thousands of free and paid applications available for Ubuntu.

Tweak Tool. Change advanced settings – appearance, fonts, keyboard and mouse, windows and workspaces. Install extensions, set power options, select startup applications.

KDE Applications 15.08


Kubuntu comes with KDE Applications 15.08 containing all your favorite apps from KDE, including Dolphin. This is the first stability update, and contains bugfixes and translation updates. 107 applications have been ported to KDE Frameworks 5 but those which aren’t should fit in seamlessly.

Non-KDE applications include LibreOffice 5.0 and Firefox 41.

Ubuntu Mate 15.10

One of the biggest improvements to the Ubuntu mate Desktop is the multi monitor supports and the new audio mixer library.

New Changes

Fixed update-manager and do-release-upgrade to upgrade from Ubuntu MATE 15.04 to Ubuntu MATE 15.10.

Fixed the openSUSE panel layout, GNOME Main Menu no longer crashes.

Fixed ubi-timezone error in Ubiquity.

Fixed Caja undelete, which was causing Caja to crash or fail to undelete.

Updated MATE Tweak to 3.5.2a

Remove all deprecated GTK properties.

Make irrelevant UI elements insensitive rather than being hidden.

Fix retaining the current theme settings when switching to Metacity.

Fix Plank not being left running when saving a custom theme.

Fix leaving multiple volume applets enabled when switching panel layouts.

Fix CTRL+C not closing MATE Tweak.

Updated Ubuntu MATE Welcome to

Removed Simple Screen Recorder, it is not compatible with Ubuntu MATE 15.10 or any 15.10 flavour.

Remove Synapse, it has an intermitent issue resulting in segmentation fault on Ubuntu MATE 15.10.

Updated the boot screen artwork in the ISO image. Bigger, more consistent, and higher contrast for visually impaired users.

Updated Plank to 0.10.1.

Prepared Ubuntu MATE 15.10 for the Raspberry Pi 2.

The Best Linux Distributions for Beginners – 2015

If you are thinking about switching to Linux or simply would like to try it but don’t know which distribution to use here is a small list of some of its most popular ones. As we all know (current Linux users) there are many different distributions that suit different purposes for its users and it can be overwhelming for someone that has little or no knowledge of Linux.
Which Linux distribution should I choose? Well the answer will really depend on what would you want to do with it and your personal preferences. For example if you are a laptop user you’ll probably will need something like Ubuntu for the simple fact that it offers a great balance and performance, and its interface is friendly and it looks extremely good on laptops.

Its huge popularity gave a push to the widespread acceptance of Linux over the past few years. Ubuntu is a Debian-based distribution that redefined the meaning of “user-friendly” on Linux. It is is designed to work beautifully on the latest laptops, desktops and touch screen devices, it looks incredible on high resolution screens — and with touch screen enhancements and interface refinements including individual menu bars in each application window, it’s now even easier to use.

OpenSuse 13.2Another good distribution for desktop users is Open SUSE. Open SUSE is one of the most mature and professional distribution out there today. It has installed for default the KDE desktop environment but you can also install multiple desktop environments such as; Gnome, LXDE, Mate and Enlightenment, among others using a great application called YAST.
YAST is one of the great features in this distribution. Its a great tool, imagine it to be as a “System Preferences” application for OS x, where you can control almost every aspect of the entire operating system

Linux Mint

Mint 17.2

Linux Mint is the most popular desktop Linux distribution and the 3rd most widely used home operating system behind Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS.
It is Based on Debian and Ubuntu, it provides about 30,000 packages and one of the best software managers. It has many great tools such as; system utilities (Update Manager, Mint Menu, Software Manager…), and comes in several flavors (KDE, XFCE, Mate).

PC Linux OS

Pc Linux is tailored for beginners, using the latest KDE (version 3.2) well known for its improvements in speed and performance, This OS, certainly, takes advantage of this desktop environment, it utilizes it to its full potential in a very excellent way. KDE is Free and Open Source Software and provides all of the common tools computer users expect of a modern computing environment, such as e-mail, web browsing, file management, multimedia, and games. As with Linux Mint, the desktop will be familiar to most users with the panel, menu and icon layout.
