AWN in Ubuntu Hardy Heron

Today Im going to show you an easy way on how to install AWN a really cool dock, is just another cool application to use with Compiz Fusion, kind of like the one Mac has. Is call Avant Window Manager or just AWN is a dock-like navigation bar for the Linux desktop that positions itself at the bottom of the screen and displays the task list, launchers, and other applets. It can be used to keep track of open windows and behaves like a normal window list.

In our new version of Ubuntu AWN is included in the repository. This is the easiest way and the recommended one for most users to use.

1. – Adding repository

First go to System>Administration>Software Sources

After Synaptic Manager is open click on third party software and add this two lines

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ubuntu hardy main

Save and exit.

2. – Install AWN Manager

Open a terminal and type

sudo apt-get install awn-manager-trunk awn-extras-applets-trunk

Once that is done Go to Applications>Accesories>Avant Window Manage. One more thing AWN appears at the bottom of the screenfor that reason you should delete the bottom panel so it will look cool with nothing of the bottom but the dock.

Also you can cuztomize it for that you need to go to System>Preferences>AWN Manager

You can go here to download themes, plugins , applets

I hope this was helpful. Enjoy

  1. U know, I’ve done this AND I’ve downloadet it from the add/remove download tool under apps.

First I did this tutorial, but it didn’t work, then I framented and installed hardy heron again, the I downloadet, and exactly the same thing – it won’t open when I push the button. I’ve tried to set it to start automatically when I start up, but the same thing..

what happens is: a window appers and disappears again in 1/10 of a second.. :s

and the same with compiz – I install the setting thing and check some stuff, but when I close they won’t work, also when I restart :s
